How to Get a Marriage Licence

To get a marriage licence, you will need to:

1.  Bring TWO pieces of government-issued identification for each of you. One piece of identification must include a photo. Here are examples of government-issued identification:

  • Government-issued birth certificate 
  • Legal change of name certificate
  • Valid passport
  • Canadian Citizenship Card
  • Valid Driver’s Licence
  • Valid Ontario Photo Card

2.  Pay a fee (fees vary depending on the municipality)

3.  Some municipalities have additional requirements for obtaining marriage licences. Check your municipality's website to ensure you have all the requirements needed. Links to Ontario municipalities are provided below.

NOTE: A marriage licence is valid for only 90 days from the date it was issued. This means that your wedding should take place within this 90-day window.
